Sawley Abbey Ruins

Sawley Abbey was founded in 1146 however during Henry VIIIs Dissolution of the Monasteries it was abandonded and in the time following high quality stone was taken off to build neighbouring houses. This left the ruins that are there today.

At Sawley Abbey Askins and Littles work was to help conserve the remaining structure by replacing stones to provide structural intergrity to the high level stone. We also removed cementious pointing and replaced it with lime mortar. All work had to be carried out in a careful and methodical manner as to not cause futher problems.
